The Congregation of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) is the first indigenous religious congregation in India.

1. His Excellency Mark Spalding, Bishop of Nashville, visited Chavara Hills along with Rev. Fr. Thomas P. Kalam CMI on January 2020. He interacted with the community and appreciated the services of CMI members working in his diocese.

2. The silver jubilee of religious profession was celebrated with due spiritual preparation in Chavara Hills from January 10-12, 2020. Rev. Fr. Thomas Kochumuttom, Rev. Fr. Peter Chakiath OCD, Rev. Fr. Paul Poovathingal and Rev. Fr. Quriakose Elias guided the sessions on Integration and Interiority: Chavara Legacy for CMI Way of Life. The spirituality of interiority and integration was presented from the perspective of the Oriental, Indian and Carmelite roots of our congregation. Rev. Fr. Prior General interacted with the members and felicitated them for their committed service in CMI congregation. Congratulations to Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheruparambil, the General Formation Coordinator and the Chavara Hills community for organizing the event very systematically.

3. The golden jubilee batch of priestly ordination assembled in Chavara Hills from January 13 to 15, 2020. Jubilee reflection inputs were given by Rev. Fr. Thomas Kochumuttom, Rev. Fr. Peter Chakiath OCD, Rev. Fr. Paul Poovathingal and Rev. Fr. Quriakose Elias The theme, Integration and Interiority: Chavara Legacy for CMI Way of Life was presented from the perspective of the Oriental, Indian and Carmelite roots of our congregation. Thanks to Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheruparambil, the General Formation Coordinator and Chavara Hills community for organizing the event very systematically.

4. CMI Bishops joined Chavara Hills community for dinner on January 14, 2020. They felicitated the golden jubiliarians of priestly ordination and interacted with the community. Fr. Prior General thanked them for their presence and support.

5. The drafting committee for the preparation of Instrumentum Laboris assembled and held discussions at Chavara Hills on January 18, 2020.

6. The members who celebrate the silver jubilee of priestly ordination spent time, on January 19-20, 2020, at Chavara Hills in reflection. Rev. Fr. Thomas Kochumuttom and Rev. Fr. Peter Chakiath OCD gave input on Integration and Interiority: Chavara Legacy for CMI Way of Life. Rev. Fr. Prior General interacted with the members and felicitated them for their committed service in CMI congregation. Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheruparambil, the General Formation Coordinator and Chavara Hills community organized the event very effectively.

7. Diamond Jubilee of St. Therese Carmelite Chapel in Northshore Mall, Peabody, Boston, was celebrated on January 3, 2020 along with the feast of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara. His Eminence Cardinal Sean O’Malley led the celebration of the mass and gave the homily. The chapel run by O. Carm. Fathers was transferred to CMIs in 2016. Cardinal O’Malley congratulated and thanked CMIs for their exemplary service in the mall chapel and he stated, “For many people, a mall is like a temple of consumerism. It might be a spiritual desert. But we have an oasis in this desert, where people can come to be renewed and refreshed spiritually”. Pastors of local parishes, Carmelite sisters and around 250 lay faithful joined our members in celebration. Congratulations to Rev. Fr. Jilson Naduviledath and team.

8. Constitution Retreat was organized in Nirmal Province, Jagdalpur from January 13-17, 2020. 73 members attended the retreat. Rev. Fr. Lawrence Padamadan CMI, Rev. Fr. James Thayyil CMI, Rev. Fr. Francis Aykaraparmpil CMI, Rev. Fr. Thomas Muppathinchira CMI, Rev. Fr. Sebastian Mavunkal CMI and Rev. Fr. Anu Vellappally CMI were the preachers of the retreat.

9. Constitution retreat commenced at CSR Pariyaram on January 19, 2020. Rev. Fr. Thomas Kochumuttam is the preacher of the retreat.

v Rev. Fr. Francis Bertin Chakkalamattath CMI (83), (Devamatha Province, Thrissur) was called to eternal reward on 11 January 2020. The funeral was on Monday, 13 January 2020 at 2. 30 pm at Ambazhakad Monastery.

v Rev. Fr. Paul Ben Nettikkadan CMI (79), (Devamatha Province, Thrissur) was called to eternal reward on 14 January 2020.

The funeral was on 16 January 2020 at 2. 30 pm at St. George’s Ashram, Kunnamkulam.

v Rev. Fr. George Muttamthottil CMI (74) (Sacred Heart Province, Kochi) was called to eternal reward on 19 January 2020. The funeral took place on Monday, 20 January 2020 at 2. 30 pm at Rajagiri Provincial House.

v Mrs. Mary Joseph Ittikunnel (73), beloved mother of Rev. Fr. Binoy Ittikunnel CMI (Carmel Province, Muvattupuzha) was called to eternal reward on 18 January, 2020. The funeral was held on Sunday 19 January 2020 at 3.00 pm at St. Joseph’s Church, Upputhodu.

v Mrs. Ammini Abraham (80), beloved Mother of Rev. Fr. Jose Kodiyan CMI (Devamatha Province, Thrissur) was called to eternal reward on 18 January 2020. The funeral was on 19 January 2020 at 4.00 pm at Sacred Heart Church Kaduppassery.

v Mr. Mani M M Mattathil (94) (Pappachan) Beloved Father of Rev. Fr. George Mattathil CMI (Sr) (St. Joseph Province, Kottayam) was called to eternal reward. The Funeral was on Tuesday, 21 January 2020 at 2.30 pm at St. Xavier’s Church, Mannarappara.

v Mr. Joseph K C Kalariyamakkal (71) Beloved Elder Brother of Rev. Fr. Mathew Thayil CMI (St. Joseph Province, Kottayam) was called to eternal reward. The Funeral was on Tuesday, 21 January 2020 at 11.00 am at Cathedral Church, Pala.

v Mrs. Annamma Augustine Nelluvelil (86) Beloved Mother of Rev. Fr. Tomy Nelluvelil CMI (St. Joseph Province, Kottayam) was called to eternal reward. The Funeral will be on Wednesday, 22 January 2020 at 2.30 pm at St. Augustine's Forane Church, Ramapuram.
